I believe the hugbox was expanding all the way back from the 60s to today. The last couple of years though, the number of people in the hugbox may well have been in decline already. Even as the hugbox itself still grew.
But while they may be able to defend the hugbox against long term vaccine effects, and possibly even against a military success of Russia, there is no way they can keep the hugbox at its current size when globalization is on the wane.
